Am Samstag ist Kiezflohmarkt, die Familie verkauft Kram und irgendwann sitze ich alleine an unserem Stand und kann nicht weg. Der Nachbar verkauft Lampen.
Saturday is the neighbourhood flea market, the family sells stuff and at some point I sit alone at our stall and can’t leave. The neighbour sells lamps.
Heute Nachmittag fahre ich aus Berlin raus an die Havel zum Götzer Berg und laufe durch die Angelerteiche zum Fichtner Hafen und von dort auf einem Trampelpfad Richtung Havel. Je weiter ich laufe, desto zugewachsener und wilder wird der Pfad, ist am Ende kaum mehr zu erkennen, und ich bahne mir den Weg durch Sträucher, Brombeerern und Hagebutten. Es ist sumpfig, ein Baum von Bibern angefressen. Die Havel kann ich hinter hohem Schilf nur erahnen. Ich setze mich an einen Altarm und zeichne. Wasservogelgequake und Mückengesurre.
This afternoon I drive out of Berlin to the Havel at Götzer Berg and walk through the fishing ponds to Fichtner Hafen and from there along a trail towards the Havel. The further I walk, the more overgrown and wild the path becomes, hardly recognisable at the end, and I make my way through bushes, blackberries and rose hips. It is swampy, a tree has been eaten by beavers. I can only glimpse the Havel behind tall reeds. I sit down at an oxbow lake and draw. Waterfowl squawk and mosquitoes buzz.
In der Hat Bar am Kantdreieck gibt es wieder Live Musik – Jeden Abend ab Neun eine offene Jamsession. Zum Glück hat die Bar den Lockdown überstanden. In einem Tonnengewölbe unter der S-Bahn ist die schmale Bühne gegenüber dem Tresen, an dem gibt es Cocktail und Whisky und Bier, und auf der schmalen Bühne spielen Carolyn De Rosario Klavier, Carmelo Leotta Bass und ein Schlagzeuger, dessen Namen ich nicht weiß.
Live music is back at the Hat Bar at Kantdreieck – an open jam session every night from nine. Fortunately, the bar has survived the lockdown. In a barrel vault under the S-Bahn is the narrow stage opposite the bar, where there are cocktails and whisky and beer, and on stage Carolyn De Rosario plays piano, Carmelo Leotta bass and a drummer whose name I don’t know.
Ein nervös wirkender Mann spricht mit Pianistin und Bassist – er möchte Singen und scheint hier bekannt zu sein. auf der Bühne wirkt er auf einmal sehr present und ruhig und singt sicher und professionell.
A nervous-looking man talks to the pianist and bassist – he wants to sing and seems to be known here. on stage he suddenly seems very present and calm and sings confidently and professionally.
Nach seinem Auftritt wird er von einem sehr redseligen Mann, der mit seiner Familie an der Bar sitzt befragt. Sonst singt er nur auf der Straße. Da hat er seine Stellen. Leider redet der Familienmensch sehr viel und der Sänger kommt kaum zu Wort, schließlich geht die Familie und ich frage ihn, ob ich ihn zeichnen darf. Er willigt ein. Nach Reden ist ihm nicht. Er entschuldigt sich, er müsse klären, ob die Musiker seine Lieder können – scheint so – und er geht viel hin und her.
After his performance he is questioned by a very talkative man sitting at the bar with his family. Otherwise he only sings on the street. That’s where he has his spots. Unfortunately, the family man talks a lot and the singer hardly gets a word. Finally, the family leaves and I ask the singer if I can draw him. He agrees. He doesn’t feel like talking. He apologises, he has to clarify whether the musicians know his songs – it seems so – and he goes back and forth a lot.

Das braucht er nicht. Er umklammert fest den Mikrofonständer und singt noch einmal.

Samstag Abend sehe ich Absperrungen, und einen Tisch mit Desinfektionmittel, Masken und Einlaß-QR-Code vor dem New West Club. An der Tür stehen die Betreiber und bald bildet sich eine Schlange junger Menschen auf dem Bürgersteig.
Saturday evening I see barriers, and a table with disinfectant, masks and admission QR code in front of the New West Club. The operators are at the door and soon a queue of young people cue on the pavement.
Bereits hier ist einigermaßen fröhliche Stimmung, einige Gruppen unterhalten sich nur eine Weile mit wartenden Freunden und gehen wieder, ohne zu versuchen herein zu kommen.
Already here the mood is cheerful, some groups just chat for a while with friends and leave without trying to get in.
Andere warten geduldig mit Negativ-Nachweis und gezückter Luca App. Das Türmanagement scheint recht regide, lange Zeiträume wird niemand reingelassen, erst wenn Leute gehen darf dürfen neue rein.
Others wait patiently with negative proof and Luca app drawn. The door management seems to be quite regid, no one is let in for long periods of time, only when people leave new ones are allowed in.
Dabei geht es ausgesprochen freundlich zu, inwieweit die Anwesenheit eines sehr großen und breiten Mannes neben der Tür dazu beiträgt, weiß ich nicht.
Everybody is friendly, but I don’t know to what extent the presence of a very tall and broad man next to the door contributes to this.
Immer wieder kommen Gäste aus dem Club, schnappen Luft, quatschen oder holen sich auch am benachbarten Späti etwas zu trinken. Der hat einen Tisch mit zwei Stühlen vor dem Fenster, an dem im Wechsel Stamm und Clubgäste sitzen, auf einem Bierkasten neben der Tür sitzt ein weiterer Späti-Stammgast gelassen, steht ab und zu auf, um ein neues kaltes Bier zu holen und beachtet das Treiben überhaupt nicht.
Guests come out of the club, take a breath, chat or get something to drink at the neighbouring Späti. There’s a table with two chairs in front of it, regulars and club guests sit alternately. Another regular sits calmly on a beer crate next to the door, gets up every now and then to get another cold beer and doesn’t pay any further attention.
Er bleibt auch unbeteiligt, als irgendwann eine Gruppe Polizisten anrückt und in den Club will, um die Einhaltung der Hygienevorschriften zu kontrollieren. Der große breite Mensch will sie nicht reinlassen, er sieht die, dauernden Besuche als geschäftschädigende Schikane und besteht auf Hausrecht und Gerichtsbeschluß. Während er mit Polizisten verhandelt tauchen immer mehr gerüstete Polizeibeamt auf, die sich aber sehr ruhig und gelassen aufstellen, von interessierten Clubgästen beobachtet. Ein Typ fragt mich, ob das denn überhaupt erlaubt sei, einfach so Polizisten zu zeichnen, wie ich es tue, und er fragt direkt mal einen der Beamten. Kein Problem, sie dürften auch fotografiert werden, das sei schon ok. Der Türsteher läßt schließlich die Polizisten herein. Scheint alles in Ordnung zu sein. Bald danach ruft einer der Betreiber den Gästen zu, sie sollten entweder (mit Masken!) wieder rein kommen oder gehen, die Menschenansammlung auf dem Bürgersteig scheint die meisten Sorgen zu machen. Er bittet den Spätiwirt berlinerisch höflich doch “auch mal seine Terasse rein zu räumen”, so um 2 morgens, und der trägt tatsächlich seine beiden Klappstühle rein.
He also remains unconcerned when a group of policemen arrive and want to enter the club to check compliance with hygiene regulations. The tall, broad man doesn’t want to let them in. He sees the constant visits as business-damaging harassment and insists on domiciliary rights and a court order. While he negotiates with police officers, more and more armoured police officers appear, but they stand very calmly, observed by interested club guests. One guy asks an officerif it’s allowed to draw police officers like I do. He says it’s no problem, they can be photographed, it’s okay. The doorman finally lets the Police in, all ok, it seems. One of the operators calls the guests to either come in (with mask!) or leave, the crowd on the pavement seems to worry most. He (berlin-) politely asks the Späti host to “clear his terrace” at 2am, and he actually carries his two folding chairs inside.

Dieses Jahr fällt das ‘Wassermusik-Festival’ aus, dafür gibt es ’21 Sunsets’ dh. kleine Konzerte mit lokalen, also spontaner buchbaren Musikern (+ Autoren und Filmen) auf der Dachterrasse des Haus der Kulturen der Welt, beides wie schon 2020. Auch wenn es um die Wassermusik natürlich sehr schade ist ist es eigentlich genauso toll, nur anders.
Freitag gehen wir zum 2ten mal hin.
Zuerst kommt Adi Amati, mit Tänzer, DJ und einem Feature, deren Namen ich vergessen habe …

Zum Schluß wird heftig getanzt (mit Masken ists draussen erlaubt) beim Soundsysten Freak de’l Afrique.
Es gibt noch viele der 21 Sunsets und hingehen ist gut.
Unser Hotel in Paris ist nicht weit vom Gare del Est im 10ten Arrondissement.

Durch den Stadtteil fließt der Canal Saint-Martin, der durch einen Tunnel von der Seine kommend hier ans Tageslicht gerät und nach Norden ins Bassin de la Vilette führt.
Abends sitzen Leute an den Ufern oder bleiben zum reden stehen. Der kleine Park in der Nähe ist Abends geschlossen. Ich stehe an einer der zwei Drehbrücken, die vor einer der 5 Schleusen den Kanal überquert.
The Canal Saint-Martin flows through the district, coming into daylight here after passing through a tunnel from the Seine and leading north into the Bassin de la Vilette.
In the evening, people sit on the banks or pause to talk. The small park nearby is closed in the evening. I stand at one of the two rotating bridges, which crosses the channel before one of the 5 locks.
Die Schleuse hat zwei Kammern, an der oberen sind daneben zwei kleine, gegenüber den Uferstraßen angehobene Plätze mit großen Platanen, Klettergerät, einer Tischtennisplatte und einem Beton-Kicker.
Weiterer Platz bei der Schleuse ist gerade von einer Baustelle belegt – 2 Gerüste für Fußgängerbrücken spannen über den Kanal.
Erst am Wochenende sehen wir Boote, meistens leere Ausflugsschiffe, Drehbrücken und Kanal durchfahren.
The lock has two chambers, at the upper one there are two small squares next to it, raised in relation to the riverside roads, with large plane trees, climbing equipment, a ping-pong table and a concrete table football.
Further place near the lock is just occupied by a construction site – 2 scaffolds for pedestrian bridges span over the canal.
Only on the weekend we see boats, mostly empty excursion boats, pass through rotating bridges and canal.
Die Rue Faubourg du Temple quert den Kanal direkt neben dem Tunnelaustritt. Nach Westen sehe ich durch die Straße über die Lieferautos und durch den Regen die Statue auf dem Place de la Republique.
Rue Faubourg du Temple crosses the canal right next to the tunnel exit. To the west, I view through the street over the delivery cars and the rain the statue on the Place de la Republique.
Morgens in der Rue de Lancry westlich des Kanals. Die Dame im Gemüseladen räumt Gemüse aus einem Stapel Holzkisten in die Auslage. Weisse Autos verschiedener Größen liefern Sachen aus. Neben mir trinken Leute an kleinen runden auf dem schmalen Gehsteig platzierten Tischen Kaffee. Auf der Strasse steht ‘RALENTIR’.
Morning in the Rue de Lancry west of the canal. The lady in the greengrocer’s store is clearing vegetables from a stack of wooden crates into the display. White cars of various sizes deliver stuff. Next to me, people drink coffee at small round tables placed on the narrow sidewalk. On the street is written ‘RALENTIR‘.
Abends wird in der selben Bar eher Bier getrunken, vor den vielen Bistros und Restaurants im Viertel sind alle Tische besetzt.
In the evening, people tend to drink beer in the same bar, and all the tables are occupied in front of the many bistros and restaurants in the neighbourhood.
Im Le Flash gegenüber unserem Hotel schauen viele Gäste auf den großen Fernseher an der Wand – in der Bar werden auch Sportwetten angenommen – andere Quatschen.
At Le Flash opposite our hotel, many guests watch the big TV on the wall – the bar also takes sports bets – others chat.
Östlich des Kanals ist ebenfalls viel Gastronomie. An der Ecke Rue Albert und Rue Marie et Louise treffen sich morgens einige Männer an einer Bank.
East of the canal there is also a lot of gastronomy. On the corner of Rue Albert and Rue Marie et Louise, some men meet at a bench in the morning.
An einer Ecke des ‘Hopital Saint Louis’ ist das ‘Café Concert Chez Adel’. Leute holen sich drinnen Bier und sitzen damit dann draussen. Auf den Tischen liegen Jakobsmuschelschalen als Aschenbecher.
On one corner of the ‘Hopital Saint Louis’ is the ‘Café Concert Chez Adel’. People get beer inside and then sit outside with it. There are scallop shells on the tables as ashtrays.
Westlich des Kanals mündet die Passage Dubail durch einen Torbogen unter dem Eckhaus in den Boulevard de Magenta.
To the west of the canal, the Passage Dubail opens into the Boulevard de Magenta through an archway under the corner building.
Nordwestlich vom Place de la Republique sind um die Port Saint-Martin viele Lokale, vor denen am Sonntagabemd überall Fußball geguckt wird. Italien gegen England, Europameisterschaft, vermute ich. Ich setze mich vor die ruhigste Kneipe und zeichne.
Ein aufgekratzter Typ will, glaube ich, ein Portrait, ich versuche zu sagen, dass das hier nicht Montmatre und ich im Urlaub sei, erst auf Englisch, er versteht nicht und wir suchen nach gemeinsamer Sprache und finden Italienisch. Allerdings scheint er mich jetzt für einen Italiener zu halten (was nicht für seine Italienischkenntnisse spräche) und angesichts der Gegner in dem Fußballspiel wird die Situation langsam konfus, besonders, da ich mich offensichtlich gar nicht für das Spiel interessiere (das liegt allerdings nicht daran, dass ich kein Italiener bin, sondern das mir Fußball egal ist). Da ich das alles kaum erklären kann, gehe ich vor Ende des Spieles.
Northwest of the Place de la Republique, around the Port Saint-Martin, there are many bars where people watch football on Sunday evenings. Italy against England, European Championship, I guess. I sit down in front of the quietest bar and draw.
An excited guy asks for a portrait (as far as I understand) and I try to say that this is not Montmatre and that I’m on holiday, first in English, he doesn’t understand and we look for a common language and find Italian. However, he now seems to think I am Italian (which would not speak for his knowledge of Italian) and in view of the opponents in the football match, the situation slowly becomes confused, especially as I am obviously not interested in the game at all (this is not because I am not Italian, but because I don’t care about football). As I can hardly explain it all, I leave before the end of the game.
Wir besuchen den Friedhof Père-Lachaise im 20ten Arrodissement. Neben den Hauptwegen laufen wir durch das wunderschöne Labyrinth kleiner Wege zwischen den verwitterten Grabarchitekturen.
We visit the Père-Lachaise cemetery in the 20th Arrodissement. Besides the main paths, we walk through the beautiful labyrinth of small paths between the weathered tomb architectures.
An der Stadgrenze von Paris an die Stadt Saint-Ouen ist ein großer Flohmarkt. Fest installierte Marktbuden und eine große Markthalle – in denen Antiquitäten in ruhiger Atmosphäre angeboten werden, sind umringt von einem engen und lauten Markt mit mit Markenzeichen beschrifteten Turnschuhen, Klamotten, dazwischen Streetfoodstände, davor fliegende Händler mit Sonnenbrillen und Apple-Airpods für 20 €. Ich stehe auf dem Mittelstreifen der Avenue de la Port de Clignancourt, um mich verkeilen sich immer mal wieder Autos, was dann mit hartnäckigem Hupen aufgelöst wird.
On the city limits of Paris at Saint-Ouen is a big flea market. Permanently installed market stalls and a large market hall – where antiques are on offer in a quiet atmosphere, are surrounded by a narrow and noisy market with branded trainers, clothes, in between street food stalls, in front of them flying traders with sunglasses and Apple Airpods for 20 €. I’m standing on the central strip of the Avenue de la Port de Clignancourt, with cars wedged around me now and then, which then gets resolved with persistent honking.
Marie-Christine hat uns zu einem Treffen der Urbansketchers Paris eingeladen und wir können Zeichnen, trotzdem es regnet, da über uns die Marquise des Café Nénesse ist und lernen einige der Pariser Zeichner kennen.
Marie-Christine has invited us to a meeting of the Urbansketchers Paris and we can draw even though it is raining, as above us is the Marquise of the Café Nénesse and get to know some of the Parisian sketchers.

Vom Moserhof sind über Wiesen die bewaldeten Berge zu sehen. Am 1. Juli gehe ich trotz gelegentlicher Regenschauer los.
From the Moserhof, the forested mountains can be seen over meadows. On 1 July I set off for a walk despite occasional rain showers.
Auf dem Weg Richtung der Seitenalm schaue ich in das Bachtal eines Zufluß des Weißenbach. Ich lehne mit dem Rücken an eine große Weiß-Tanne, die die Regentropfen abhält.
On the way towards the Seitenalm, I peer into a stream valley of a tributary of the Weißenbach. I lean with my back against a large white fir tree, which keeps the raindrops off.
Von der Seitenalm gehe ich zum nahen Karkopf. Dessen Gipfel ist bewaldet und ich schaue über Tannen nach Südosten über das Trockenbachtal. Über den Bergen dahinter hängen dunkle Wolken. Ich beeile mich mit dem Zeichnen.
From the Seitenalm I walk to the nearby Karkopf. Its summit is forested and I look over fir trees to the southeast across the Trockenbach valley. Dark clouds hang over the mountains behind. I hurry to draw.
Ich laufe hinüber zum Hochries. Auf der Hütte sind einige wenige Wanderer. Ich esse Debriziner und trinke Helles, dabei lasse ich die letzte Seilbahn ins Tal fahren, warte einen heftigen Schauer ab und laufe danach durch neblige Wälder ins Tal.
I walk over to the Hochries. There are a few hikers at the hut. I eat Debriziner and drink ‘Helles’, while letting the last cable car go down into the valley, wait out a heavy shower and then walk through foggy woods into the valley.
Meine Eltern fahren seit vielen Jahren immer wieder auf den Moserhof in den Urlaub. Meine fabelhafte Mutter feiert hier dieses Jahr mit vielen bayrischen Freunden und Familie einen runden Geburtstag.
My parents have been going on holiday to the Moserhof for many years. My fabulous mother is celebrating a round birthday here this year with many Bavarian friends and family.
An Biertischen wird gegessen und getrunken, es gibt eine schöne Rede und Musik.
People eat and drink at beer tables, there is a nice speech and music.
An anderen Abenden wird z.B. gewürfelt.
On another evenings dice are thrown.
Zum Moserhof gehört auch Holzwirtschaft. Am Hof liegt gestapeltes Holz.
Timber farming is also part of the Moserhof. There is stacked wood at the farm.
Im Filzen ganz unten im Tal gibt es einen schönen Lehrpfad, der führt auch durch Tannen.
In Filzen, at the very bottom of the valley, there is a beautiful nature trail that also leads through fir trees.
Auf dem Hof gibt es Ziegen, Hühner und Stallkaninchen.
There are goats, chicken and rabbits at the farm.
Eines davon läuft frei rum und nicht weg.
One of them is running free and not away.
Auf den Wiesen stehen Kühe.
There are cows in the meadows.
An der Kreuzung der Kant- und der Kaiser-Friedrichstraße knapp Mitternacht. Es ist Sommer und warm.
At the junction of Kantstrasse and Kaiser-Friedrichstrasse, almost midnight. It’s summer and warm.
Der Jungfernheide Forst grenzt an den Flughafen Tegel, und weiter südlich an einen Zaun, an dem Schilder hängen, auf denen was von ‘Militärischem Sperrgebiet’ und ‘Schusswaffengebrauch’ steht. Auf dieser Seite stehen hohe Eichen und Kiefern und während der Stunde, die ich hier in die Bäume schaue, kommt nur ein Jogger vorbei.
Jungfernheide Forst borders on Tegel Airport, and further south on a fence with signs saying ‘restricted military area’ and ‘use of firearms’. On this side there are tall oaks and pines, and during the hour I spend looking into the trees here, only one runner passes by.
